Freetown, 10 August 2026 – The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) on Monday held a solemn Interfaith Service at the Senior Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters in Kingtom, to commemorate officers who lost their lives during the disturbances of 10 August 2022.
The ceremony brought together police leadership, serving officers, bereaved families, religious leaders and other stakeholders. The gathering reflected on the sacrifice of the fallen, prayed for their souls and reaffirmed the force’s commitment to peace and security.
about:blank Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu described the occasion as one of deep sorrow mixed with gratitude. He stressed that the officers should be remembered not only for how they died, but for the dedication with which they served.
“Being a police officer requires a special kind of heart. It involves walking out of the front door each shift knowing the risks, yet choosing to protect and serve,” the IGP said.
He praised their selflessness in facing danger to safeguard the nation’s peace and urged serving officers to uphold courage, professionalism, integrity, discipline and dedication in honour of their colleagues’ legacy.
IGP Sellu extended heartfelt condolences to the families, acknowledging the loss of fathers, mothers, spouses, children and friends.
He assured them that the sacrifice of their loved ones remains vital to Sierra Leone’s security and progress, and called on both the police family and the wider public to continue supporting the bereaved.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Sylvester Koroma highlighted the six officers who died during the 2022 disturbances and those who were injured.
about:blank He noted the daily dangers police face, ranging from armed attacks to accidents, and called for stronger measures to protect officers while building community resilience.
AIG Brima Kanneh also expressed deep sympathy to the families and reminded officers of the inherent risks of policing.
about:blank He urged continued vigilance, unity, professionalism and integrity, with particular focus on supporting the families left behind.
Christian and Muslim leaders led prayers, scripture readings and reflections. They sought eternal rest for the fallen, comfort for the bereaved, and lasting peace and security for Sierra Leone. The service also paid tribute to Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen, with the well-known lines: “Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
The ceremony ended with final prayers for the departed, strength for their families, and enduring peace across the country. The bravery and dedication of the fallen officers, the SLP said, remain a proud part of the nation’s history and will continue to inspire the force.
