Editorial Insight: The Electoral Systems Debate in Sierra Leone 🇸🇱

There’s a heated national debate on what electoral system best suits our democracy.
 
The Constitution outlines First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) as the standard. However, it also allows Proportional Representation (PR) in unforeseen circumstances—like civil unrest or disruptions that may affect fair elections.

Why PR?
PR offers a broader reflection of the population, especially when data is lacking. It encourages inclusivity and avoids the “winner takes all” outcome. It also removes the burden and cost of by-elections by letting parties fill vacancies.

Why FPTP?
Supporters say it gives direct power to the people. Voters elect individuals, not just political parties. MPs are accountable to constituents—not just their party.

But here’s the issue  
Under PR, MPs answer to parties, not voters. Many citizens don’t even know their representatives anymore. It weakens the link between voters and leaders.

The editorial calls for a national dialogues —with chiefs, religious leaders, civil society, media, and the grassroots involved.

Democracy must reflect the will of the people. Whether PR or FPTP, no system should be used unless conditions truly demand it.
